Brooklyn To Congress: Give Peace A Chance!
Jun 14, 2014 Fort Greene Peace members were out at the green market this morning at Fort Greene Park. They were handlng out flyers and collecting signatures. The issue? Demanding that Congress support diplomacy, not war, with Iran. Currently, the Obama administration is engaged in negotiations with the government of Iran to settle disputes over that country's nuclear programs. Using diplomatic talks to solve differences is a sharp departure from the policies of the Bush administration which launched two wars in the region - wars that devastated two countries with untold death and destruction. The wars which cost trillions of dollars also had a destructive effect at home: money diverted to war could have been used to solve urgent domestic needs. Some conservative members of Congress, both Republic and Democrat, have been acting to undermine the talks with Iran by pushing for tougher and tougher sanctions even while the diplomacy is ongoing. They also aim to destroy the talks by insisting on such severe demands that Iran, most experts believe, would be forced to abandon the negotiations. The end result would be to put us on the road to yet another Mid-East war. Residents were asked to sign an Open Letter To Congress which demands that members support diplomacy and not war with Iran.
